East of Eden: James Dean's performance as the unloved character Cal in Elia Kazan's penetrating film of John Steinbeck's novel. Dean's personality was the essence of an age characterized by youthful rebellion. The film's cinemascope wide screen production captured the width and complexities of this very dark story of a family struggling to find true identities.
