The film that impressed my soul when I was a kid was the 1935 version of She, starring Randolph Scott. It was screened at the first FilmEx at the Egyptian back in the 70's. The black and white days will never be replaced for their beauty and dramatic images.

When I watched the film, the lighting was still impressive to me--although as a kid I didn't know about such things. All I knew was that it evoked a strong feeling in my young mind. Maybe subconsciously that film lead me to becoming a cinematographer.

It's too bad that the heads of studios and networks can't let themselves take the chance to produce new black and white films. Can't they see that young directors and cinematographers working for MTV keep heading toward the black and white "look": using sepia, green, yellow and blue monochromatic tones? And the young accept it. Hey! Isn't youth the new and improved market? The director on my project wanted to do black and white because it's about Abraham Lincoln, what better way to feel you are there as a historical witness?
