Favorite Forgotten Films

by Steve Yaconelli, ASC

Growing up in post-WWII America, I was saturated with westerns and war films. I picked up one on television back in the fifties — Lewis Milestone's 1946 black & white film, A Walk in the Sun, photographed by Russell Harlan, ASC.

I haven't seen it in many years — but images from it are always available to me. It was probably shot in twenty days. Low budget. Just some GI's walking away from a beach called Solermo to a farmhouse nobody every heard of. Sweat, grime, available light and a theme song that stays with you forever.
