Building on a worthy heritage

by Owen Roizman, ASC
President of ASC

I'll never forget the day I was invited to join ASC. I was thrilled that the cinematographers whose work I had admired for so many years thought of me as their peer. Since ASC was founded in 1919, only some 400-plus cinematographers have earned the right to put those three letters after their names. Approximately, half of those people are members today. Over the years, ASC has come to symbolize the pursuit of artistic perfection. That was the vision of our founders. It is our obligation to nurture that heritage for the next generation. But, while our roots are firmly planted in preserving the traditions of the past, our eyes are on the future. An important component of our heritage is an unrelenting commitment to progress.
