For a shot following Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) out of the English Channel and onto Omaha Beach, key grips Jim Kwiatkowski and John Flemming had a 40 foot trailer backed into the water, which served as a platform for a length of dolly track leveld on scaffolding. An Enlouva crane was then utilized to extend over the water to support the camera, which was fitted into a water -tight housing. "The camera was underslung with Modern Studio Equipments bungee rig so that the operator could freely hold the camera while we dollied with the crane, creating a 60 foot move that led the actor out of the water,"e; explains Kwiatkowski, "The water was only about 4 feet deep, but it was still difficult for the operator because he had to trudge through the waves and dodge all of the obstacles."
