A crane suspends a 20 foot by 40 foot silk over the beach location. Using this rig in conjunction with smoke, the filmmakers were able to achieve a consistent overcast shroud for the invasion sequence. "For the shots in which soldiers were going up the cliffs," elaborates Kwiatkowski, "we had rigger Ginger McCarthy place one crane on top of the cliff and one below becuase the sun traveled perpendicular to the beach; it started over the ocean and ended over the hill."
