An essential tool throughout the shoot, the Technocrane came under close NASA scrutiny after Bay devised a shot in which operator Scott Fishman would extend the 20' arm through a series of pipes and valves within the shuttle assembly building. Bay recalls, "The pipes were carrying anhydrous hydrazine. If the camera hit a valve and it cracked open, that stuff would have killed everybody in the building. We tried to tell these NASA guys that we were very good at operating this crane, but they wanted to check it all out. So they got on the Technocrane, worked the controls, and tested it out to see exactly how it moved and how stable is was." The device passed the test.
