OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR A MULTI-CAMERA SERIES

Ron Browne
3rd Rock from the Sun
"Dick and Harry Fall in a Hole"

Ron Browne earned his first director of photography credit in 1966 on the TV series Mission: Impossible. Since then, he has worked on dozens of television productions, including Coach, McCloud, Quincy, Vega$, Something So Right, That '70s Show, Ask Harriet and The Night Stalker. His feature credits include Trader Horn and Three Amigos.

3rd Rock from the Sun, which is produced on film, features John Lithgow as Dick Solomon, the commander of a group of alien explorers visiting Earth to study its culture. In the nominated episode, Dick and Harry (French Stewart) tumble down an abandoned air shaft, prompting a televised search-and-rescue headed by an eccentric Scottish expert (played by guest star Alan Cumming).

"It was a unique episode because most of it takes place in a hole in the ground," explains Browne. "It was quite difficult to photograph; at times, we shot through a tube. We primarily used moonlight and lamplight to create the right look in the hole."
