Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) treads lightly over the Sea of Faces, a desolate plain strewn with living human heads gazing upwards at a bleak sky. To create the scene, rubber masks were interspersed with the real faces of performers below the stage. Serra found that extremely soft illumination — with no fill and just a hint of backlight — helped to sell the surreal scene.
