Cinematography Seminars Slated for
Annual Cine Gear Expo June 3-4


Premier Panels are Free with Admission to Cine Gear Expo

LOS ANGELES, May 24, 2005--Some 30 cinematographers and other filmmakers will be front and center in a series of free seminars at the Ninth Annual Cine Gear Expo at Warner Bros. Studios, in Burbank, California, on June 3 and 4, 2005. The seminars are designed to provide an open forum, where cinematographers can share their experiences and discuss their views on the future with colleagues and collaborators from all sectors of the industry, according to Kees Van Oostrum, ASC, one of the founders of Cine Gear Expo.

All Premier Seminars are free with admission to Cine Gear Expo. Admission to Cine Gear is also free if you register by May 27 or $10.00 thereafter. You can register online at www.cinegearexpo.com.

Premier Seminars will be held in Bldg. 21 at Warner Bros. Ranch within walking distance of the Expo. Seating is limited on a first come basis. Following are descriptions and schedule:

FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2005

  • 1-3 p.m. The American Society of Cinematographers: Focusing on Vital Issues

The ASC Technology Committee, which includes cinematographers, other members of the creative community, and technology thought leaders from many sectors of the entertainment film industry, will discuss the outlook for the future. Topics will include standards and practices for digital intermediate postproduction, the evolution of a new generation of digital cameras, film preservation and restoration, the need for a universal metadata standard for digital media, advanced technologies and other topics of vital interest. Technology Committee Chairman Curtis, Clark ASC and journalist Bob Fisher will moderate the discussion. Participants include Al Barton, Grover Crisp, Gary Demos, Richard Edlund, ASC, Peter Fasciano, Phil Feiner, Lou Levinson, Howard Lukk, Gary Morse, Garrett Smith, Josh Pines, and Steve Poster, ASC.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2005

  • 10a.m.-12 p.m. The Art of the Commercial
    How do you successfully grab and hold the audience’s attention while making a favorable and enduring impression in just 30 seconds? Participants will show and discuss samples of their favorite television spots. Journalist Bob Fisher will moderate the seminar. Participants include Bill Bennett, ASC, Curtis Clark, ASC, Ron Dexter, Peter Lyons Collister, ASC, Jeff Cronenweth, ASC, Allen Daviau, ASC, Jon Fauer, ASC, Guillermo Navarro, ASC, and Wally Pfister, ASC.
  • 3-5 p.m The Digital Intermediate Evolution
    Pleasantville was the first U.S. feature film finished in a digital intermediate suite by cinematographer John Lindley, ASC in 1998. This discussion will focus on the realities and myths of DI, how it is affecting the role of the cinematographer, and the outlook for the future. Journalist Bob Fisher will moderate the seminar. Participants include Steven Bernstein, ASC, Allen Daviau, ASC, Matthew Libatique, ASC, Wally Pfister, ASC, Dean Semler, ASC, ACS, Kees Van Oostrum, ASC and Amy Vincent, ASC.

In addition to the Premier Seminars, the ASC will also present Lighting Scenes from the ASC Book “Reflections” from 12:30 –2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Lethal Weapon House. Using the workbook, “Reflections: Twenty-One Cinematographers at Work" as a starting point, Allen Daviau, ASC, Steve Burum, Jack Green, ASC, and Laszlo Kovacs, ASC will recreate a few of the lighting set-ups and discuss the concepts outlined in this informative book on cinematography. Moderated by George Spiro Dibie, ASC, this seminar will examine the practice of cinematography in wide ranging discussions with professional cinematographers who analyze their art from both technical and aesthetic perspectives.
