Schlichtmann studies the poisoned land surrounding the troubled town of Woburn, Massachusetts. "The use of water gave us an opportunity for extraordinary symbolism," Hall observes. "Whenever we could, we included water in the shot, whether it was a mother pouring a glass of water at dinner, lawyers drinking water in court, a river, a dripping faucet, or pounding rain."
