While the model and visual effects units handled shooting the majority of the film's effects shots, the first unit did extensive greenscreen work. Here, they film with a full-scale six-wheeled Armadillo for a rock-storm sequence set on the asteroid. The Armadillos were depicted with a mixture of miniature and actual vehicles, respectively traversing extensive table-top landscapes and the Badlands of South Dakota.
