Following the opening day of Cine Gear Expo 2016, The Paramount Theater was the venue of the night on Friday, June 3, as Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC was introduced by Peter Crithary, Marketing Manager, Large Sensor Imaging Technologies at Sony Electronics.
Storaro — honored with Cine Gear’s Cinematography Lifetime Achievement Award — was there to present a screening of his new film, writer-director Woody Allen’s period romance Cafe Society.
The first digital production for both veteran filmmakers, the Amazon Studios picture was shot with Sony’s F65 camera.
Crithary noted that the evening’s digital presentation would be screened in native uncompressed 4K rather than DCP, which would best present Storaro’s work and the capabilities of the Sony camera system.
During his pre-screening speech, Storaro described his general approach to the film’s use of movement, color and composition and how he utilized each to create a unique sense of time and place, given the film’s 1930s period setting and alternating Los Angeles and New York City venues.
