American Cinematographer Earns Fourth
"Eddie" Award
American Cinematographer magazine earned its fourth Editorial Excellence Award, or "Eddie," on October 28, 2003, during a ceremony that capped the annual Folio: Show conference at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. The show is the nation's largest conference and exposition for the magazine industry.
AC took home the top prize, or Gold Award, in the Entertainment category after submitting the October 2002 issue for consideration. DGA magazine earned the Silver Award, and World Screen News received an honorable mention.
The ASC's flagship publication has now earned an impressive total of four Eddies over the past 7 years. American Cinematographer previously earned Gold Awards in 1996 and 2000, as well as the Silver Award in 2002. According to the Folio: organization, "Nominees are held up to standards set by their own editors and are not competing against one another. Each entry is judged on how well it articulates and adheres to its editorial mission statement. Winners are determined by comparing the judges' evaluations of each title's fulfillment of its mission, the quality of its content, and - to a lesser extent - its overall design and production."
AC Executive Editor Stephen Pizzello offered the following definition of the magazine's mission: "American Cinematographer serves filmmakers by exploring the artistic thought processes of the film industry's most innovative and talented directors of photography, and explaining the technical means by which they realize their creative visions, whether on film, video, or with computers.
"In addition, our editorial seeks to keep readers abreast of advancements in all facets of motion picture imaging technology - the tools cinematographers use to ply their trade - and to inform them of visually extraordinary productions, including feature films, television productions, commercials and music videos."
Commenting on the publication's latest Gold Award, Pizzello noted, "It's always especially gratifying to be recognized by our peers in the publishing industry. American Cinematographer is produced by a small but extremely dedicated in-house staff and a group of talented and technically informed freelance writers. Each issue of the magazine results from their hard work and collaboration, and I would like to personally thank and congratulate everyone who contributed to this well-deserved honor. I would also like to thank the ASC's Board of Governors and Publications Committee for fostering a friendly, supportive atmosphere in which the magazine can continue to thrive and excel."
